The football being played by the national teams’ youth squads have been of a very high standard generally with exciting games and lots of goals scored but apart from the host nation (England)’s games which have attracted two 6000+ and one 7000+ attendance the gates for the other group matches have been really poor which is disappointing given the low ticket prices which were meant to attract families, school trips and the like.
In group A, Italy, England and Switzerland were tied on 6 points from their three games. All three beat whipping boys Israel but Italy and England progressed thanks to the two best head to head records of the tied teams despite the Swiss having a better goal difference than England (crazy).
Group B was more straightforward with Scandinavian rivals Norway and Sweden progressing at the expense of strongly fancied Portugal, the Norwegians looking particularly impressive. Poor Slovenia had a nightmare tournament, losing all three games without scoring a single goal.
Group C was won by the impressive Belgians at a canter with the "Red Devils" winning all three games, scoring seven goals without conceding any. The second qualification place went to the Republic of Ireland who clinched a quarter final place with a 2-0 success over closest rivals Bosnia. Denmark finished a very distant fourth losing all their games.
Group D contained European football heavyweights Netherlands, Germany and Spain along with minnows Serbia. All three were in contention for a quarter final place going into the final two games. Holland comfortably dispatched of whipping boys Serbia 2-0 to win the group with a maximum nine points and second place went to the Spaniards with an eye catching 5-1 thrashing of Germany.
